Carbon and methane cycling in arsenic-contaminated aquifers

چکیده

Geogenic arsenic (As) contamination of groundwater is a health threat to millions people worldwide, particularly in alluvial regions South and Southeast Asia. Mitigation measures are often hindered by high heterogeneities As concentrations, the cause(s) which elusive. Here we used comprehensive suite stable isotope analyses hydrogeochemical parameters shed light on mechanisms typical high-As Holocene aquifer near Hanoi where advected low-As Pleistocene aquifer. Carbon signatures (?13C-CH4, ?13C-DOC, ?13C-DIC) provided evidence that fermentation, methanogenesis methanotrophy actively contributing heterogeneity. Methanogenesis occurred concurrently levels (>200 µg/L) DOC-enriched aquitard pore water infiltrates into Along flowpath Holocene/Pleistocene transition, methane oxidation causes strong shift ?13C-CH4 from -87‰ +47‰, indicating reactivity. These findings demonstrate previously overlooked role cycling DOC infiltration aquifers.

Arsenic, microbes and contaminated aquifers.

The health of tens of millions of people world-wide is at risk from drinking arsenic-contaminated well water. In most cases this arsenic occurs naturally within the sub-surface aquifers, rather than being derived from identifiable point sources of pollution. The mobilization of arsenic into the aqueous phase is the first crucial step in a process that eventually leads to human arsenicosis. Incr...

Role of Organic Carbon of Oxbow Lakes in Making Aquifers Vul- Nerable to Arsenic Mobilization

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is implicated in arsenic (As) and iron (Fe) mobilization via microbial metabolic processes. The Ganges Delta Plain is a key area where As contamination of groundwater constitutes a human catastrophe. The delta plain geomorphology comprises a large number of abandoned meander bends, or oxbow lakes (Donselaar et al., 2017) characterized by an anoxic environment in t...

Evaluation of health risks for contaminated aquifers.

This review focuses on progress in the development of transport models for heterogeneous contaminated aquifers, the use of predicted contaminant concentrations in groundwater for risk assessment for heterogeneous human populations, and the evaluation of aquifer remediation technologies. Major limitations and areas for continuing research for all methods presented in this review are identified.

Microbial Community Structure and Arsenic Biogeochemistry in Two Arsenic-Impacted Aquifers in Bangladesh

Long-term exposure to trace levels of arsenic (As) in shallow groundwater used for drinking and irrigation puts millions of people at risk of chronic disease. Although microbial processes are implicated in mobilizing arsenic from aquifer sediments into groundwater, the precise mechanism remains ambiguous. The goal of this work was to target, for the first time, a comprehensive suite of state-of...

Assessment of natural background levels in potentially contaminated coastal aquifers.

The estimation of natural background levels (NBLs) of dissolved concentrations of target chemical species in subsurface reservoirs relies on a proper assessment of the effects of forcing terms driving flow and transport processes taking place within the system and whose dynamics drive background concentration values. We propose coupling methodologies based on (a) global statistical analyses and...
